Yes!!! A Real World F.G. cause about BOOTS!!!

Nine West is sponsoring an event during NYC Fall Fashion Week (which is September 8-15, 2011 for those of you who DON'T have it memorized) to raise money for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.

It's sort of like one of those marathon fundraisers, except the "Runway Relief Models" aren't running, they're walking slooowly on the runway in Runway Relief boots. Nine West is donating $1 a mile, up to $75,000.

You can sponsor a model for however much you want.

You can also buy the boots, along with tote bags and tanks with the Runway Relief logo, and some of that money will be donated too, up to $115,000.

(<--I really like these boots, Dad. In case you're reading this.)

So you want to be a Real World f.g. but not sure how to make it happen? If you’re into eco-issues,  in college and have some free time next summer, you can apply to the Sierra Club’s summer internship program.

It’s a pretty cushy f.g. job actually, if you like the outdoors thing, because you’re basically paid to go on club trips: hiking, camping, rafting, etc. – and you’re given $2000 worth of gear. (You may have to put in hours at a Sierra Club office too, though.)

2011’s intern, Kokei Otosi, who goes to New York University, was based out of the San Francisco office. If you want to see what it’s like, you can check out her videos about her experiences.

AllyKatzz is a social networking site that features teen and tween girl bloggers. They're looking for nominees for their A.L.L.Y. Awards. (I'm not really sure what A.L.L.Y. stands for, but let me know if you find out when you visit their site -- which is pretty cool actually. It's a little too pink for me -- but it does have a lot of black too, so it evens out.)

The Awards are going to be presented on August 11 and they honor girls who've worked to help bring about positive change in the world. In other words: Real World F.G.s!

Here are some former winners, to inspire you:

Lulu Cerone: Visit her blog, LemonAID Warriors, where she gives advice and help to kids who want to run their own fundraiser.

Shannon MacNamara: Her organization, Share in Africa, is about empowering girls in Africa through education.

Katie Stagliano: She's got a bunch of gardens and donates the crops. She wants other kids to do this too. You can find out more at her website, Katie's Krops.

That's a lot of real world magic. If you've spun some similar magic of your own, go to the AllyKatzz site and nominate yourself. And let me know if you're picked!

So the Sierra Club is holding some workshops this summer to help YOU create your own F.G. movement.

Here's how to find out more and sign up:

Sierra Student Coalition’s Summer Training Program (Sprog)

Okay, so it's not really called an "F.G." movement and it has to be for pro-environment kind of stuff, but hey, if you attend one of these programs and then go out and form a group that cleans up a river or saves some birds, then you're granting some big wishes if you ask me.

I actually kind of like Lady Gaga because she definitely does her own thing with fashion.

I especially like her boots.

(Not crazy about the meat dress though. Kathy is a vegetarian.)

Now there's another reason to like her: because she's giving away $1 million, but YOU can vote on the charity, which means ANYBODY can be an f.g. just by clicking. Here's the info:

Yes! I knew it! Design and doing good CAN be combined and here's proof:

<-- This is Ella Marciano. You might already know who she is, because she's the daughter of GUESS CEO Paul Marciano, a model AND she designed this t-shirt for GUESS. The profits go to Sojourn Services for Battered Women and Their Children.

GUESS and Ella have teamed up with Teen Vogue for a t-shirt contest. No, not that kind of contest (which, of course and by the way, I would so not be promoting here as a Real World F. G. thing). This is a DESIGN contest and YOU can enter it. (You need to have some artistic talent though, but I leave that judgement up to you.)

Here's where the f.g. part comes in: the profits from this t-shirt will benefit the charity YOU choose.

So, if you're interested, sign up and enter here:

Chari-T Design Contest

Next year, maybe they'll make it a BOOT design contest...

Real Teens 2011

If you ask me a "real teen" is pretty much everybody from 13 to 19 who isn't fictional, right? Okay, well, this company Aeropostale apparently defines real teens differently, as kids "aspiring to do the right thing in life and embodying compassion, integrity and a spirit of teamwork."

In other words: Real World, F.G.s!

If that's you, you can nominate yourself here: Real Teens (click on Become a Real Teen 2011)

People then vote for you, and once it's narrowed down to 87 finalists, celebrity judges pick the top ten, who get a $5000 scholarship and also get to make a pretty cool video diary that's posted on the site. Check out the 2010 top ten here.

Picture

The 87 finalists get a $100 Aeropostale gift card. (No, it's not a mailing and packaging company, it's a clothing store chain.)

Unfortunately, I don't qualify and that's not just because I have issues with teamwork. It's mainly because I'm fictional, not real. Maybe one day  Aeropostale will let Fake Teens enter. Until then, I wish all you real people luck, without any bitterness or jealousy...really!

Yes, I know. Lots of kids do good things for people and animals and the environment and the world, etc., without using a wand and without seeking any personal gain. I may not be one of them, but if you know any, you can nominate them for a Caring Award, which is given by this organization called The Caring Institute. Young adult winners get money for college as part of the award. (!!!)

Picture
They have a list of the past winners on the site, but you have to scroll down to the Young Adult winners. (Why???? The young adults should be first, right? Whatever.) You can click on each profile to read more about them, but if you don't have time for all that, here's some quick highlights about the teen (and one pre-) winners:

Amanda LaMunyon, an artist who uses her art to raise money for kids with disabilities, including autism.

Molly and Carly Houlahan, who run a company called Hives for Lives that makes honey products that they sell to raise money for cancer.

Talia Leman, who started Random Kids, an organization where kids and teachers can connect with each other to solve any world issue that interests them.

Joshua Williams, age nine (AGE NINE!!!), who started the Joshua's Heart Foundation to help the poor in his neighborhood, and which has expanded to help out hunger worldwide.

Alison Mansfield, who has helped gather TONS of food and other supplies to send to soldiers overseas through Operation U.S. Troop Support.

So, obviously, you can't nominate somebody just because they loaned you ten dollars for those earrings or gave you a ride to the mall. They need to have done something BIG and VERY helpful, for LOTS of people. But there might be someone at your school or in your neighborhood who has -- or knows someone who has -- or knows someone who knows someone...you get the picture.

I.S. stands for Internet Star, because guess what????  I got asked to write a guest post on Randy Russell's blog (he wrote this YA book called "Dead School," which is being published next year, same year as Kathy's book about ME).  The blog is about writing in the teen voice because...yes, no duh, I'm a TEENAGER.

So here it is, because you know you want to read it and find out what I have to say or why would you be reading this blog in the first place??

Delaney Collins, F.G.'s guest superstar blog post at Randy Russell's Ghost Folk blog.

Um, yes, you'll notice that there's a photo of Kathy there and NOT ME.  Like she just could not stand it that I got to write the blog and she had to take some credit just because she's the writer of MY BOOK.

BUT!!!  There's another post about me below that one and the photos are are of MY BOOTS!!!  How cool is that?  So now I'm just going to wait for the boots to go viral and for the orders come in and soon I will be mind-explodingly rich and famous, and it's going to be my picture everywhere, not Kathy's.  (But maybe sometimes my photo with Kathy, because, you know, she is the novelist...)

Anyway, check it out: My boots at Randy's blog.

[No, these are not my boots, but since you can find my boots on the "Boots" page of my website (OF COURSE), I thought I'd paste in a photo of some boots that are soooo cool, I wish I'd made them.  No surprise they're from some site called rockyhorrors.co.uk.]
